Back Spin Practice

It was pretty crowded today at the rink so I just let the camera run from center ice for 20 minutes.  I didn't capture much except some of my back spin practice.

Unfortunately the camera stopped before I started working on camel spins.  I really wanted to see what that looked like.

The two gents with helmets on are my ice friends Dr. Wayne and Dr. John.  They are in their 80's and both retired physicians who love to skate and chat.

  1. Hi Diane! Your left hip drops after the "hook" in your back spin so that is causing you to spin on your forward inside edge. Try raising the left hip and straightening your right leg. Hope this helps! You will get it soon!

  3. Also, I noticed that you're forcing the spin a bit too early. See if you can hold the forward inside edge until you almost come back to the same spot you started (on the same plane/axis). The spin will naturally happen. If you force it too early, that will also cause you to spin on the wrong edge. I do my backspin with my left arm way up in the air behind me (I am a clockwise spinner). You can see my backspin here: http://evabakes.blogspot.com/2013/05/skating-fridays_7481.html. Keep us posted on your progress!

    1. It took me a good 1-2 years to finally get the backspin. For some weird reason, the raised arm thing was what did it for me. I hired a graphic designer (off Etsy) who gave my blog a makeover. She also designed the skater/baker graphic. Let me know if you want her info! Hope you'll join me on my blog every Friday for Skating Fridays!
