A Little Bit Of Everything

Had a lesson today right off the bat, without much warm up.  We worked on my Silver MIF which is too boring to post video on.  At the end of the lesson we worked on my Flying Camel Spin.

Found out I was doing a WALTZ JUMP + A BACK CAMEL SPIN ... not a FLYING CAMEL.

  1. Well for all you're a bit critical of yourself, I sure hope I can skate like that someday! Your loops are particularly lovely - you make them look so easy!

  2. It's how I learn. I am my own worst critic!

  3. Flying camels are tricky, and the "flying waltz jump" and "flying salchow" are both common errors. Remember that for a flying camel, you have to go into the spin with your back parallel to the ground (like a normal camel spin). Otherwise, it isn't correct.

Sorry I accidentally rejected this comment Eva

  5. Actually, your postings of MIF videos are ones that I find to be most helpful! I too am returning to the ice after a 35 year absence (skated when I was 10-11, took a few lessons, then taught myself). Started seriously skating again about 11 months ago. Am now working with a coach to pass my PreBronze MIF. Am about 75% there...will take the testing when I can do the whole routine without any wobbles and with speed. Meaning...sometime next year ;p Have had multiple knee surgeries on both knees in the past, and my right knee is my bad leg...for both 3 pts, spins, and mohawks...speaking of which...caught back blade doing forward to back mohawks last Tues. Yeah, bruise on my arm the size of Texas. However, in the spirit of skating, yesterday with my coach, I did the forward to back mohawk successfully several times-even on the bad knee/leg. I wear my bruise today with pride :)

  6. Ahh a kindred spirit! Glad my videos are helping someone besides me. That was and still is the primary reason for documenting the journey. I needed a place to hold all my videos and the blog provided that. I never thought so many would read it or follow my progress! I am happy when my learning curve can be of use (or encouragement) to someone else.

Sorry about your knee issues. My knees are ticking time bombs. On the difficult days I don't have too many jumps in me. Once it starts to hurt it really holds me back from trying. On the good days however I feel like I can keep making progress. Adult bruises are awful! A friend of mine just opened an online store for figure skaters and she carries protective wear you can wear under a dress or alone and they come with pads in them. Expensive, but high quality, also head protection. The store is called RedSwanUSA.com check it out.

And Happy Landings.... good luck with your MIF progress!

  7. Thanks! Your friend's website is just what I've been looking for-esp the knee pads. I would love the padded training pants, but I am 5' 11" and wear an extra large :( I've been finding some great training pants at Athleta.com. Their tall sizes are perfect for me, and are just long enough to partially cover the boot.

I am like you, sometimes my knees are good, and I can do waltz jumps all day...then other days, not so much. I find that it too holds me back from making progress, and more importantly, having confidence. Especially skating crossovers with speed. I find myself thinking..."I'm going really fast...this is great...oh...wait...what if I fall..." But, it is something I will overcome. It just takes time.

Thanks again and keep posting those MIF videos! Hopefully I can get my husband to video my test. He caught me today when he came home from work practicing off ice mohawks :)

  9. Thanks! I will contact her about the pants. And we are kindred spirits...today is the year anniversary of my cancer surgery, only mine was cervical. It was very early-no chemo, no metastasis, add that with of some of the most evil fibroids ever known to woman, I had a partial hysterectomy. A month after surgery, I was back on the ice. My mother was diagnosed with breast cancer the same time I was with cervical. Her breast cancer was at an early stage as well. Her surgery was was more invasive. She had the micro vascular reconstruction, where they use her abdomen fat to replace the removed breast tissue, using her own veins to reconnect blood flow. She is doing great all things considered and so far is cancer free.

Sorry I keep going on...but its nice to chat with someone who understands where we are coming from and why at our age we want to skate and what skating means to us :)

  10. Glad you and your mom are doing well. I had microvascular as well, but went with silicone for reconstruction .. I didn't have enough belly fat ... and the place where I did have enough (my derrier) was not a good choice due to the vascular size difference. Plus my surgeon was able to use the latissimus - dorsi procedure without making any scars in my back.

  11. Yeah I am in the same boat for that type of procedure. All of my extra fat is in the hips and the rear, and not enough in the front. It is amazing what re-constructive plastic surgery can do nowadays for breast cancer. The surgeon can even reconstruct her nipples, should she choose to proceed with the second part of the surgery. I joked with her that even thought it was not under the best of circumstances, her new breasts haven't looked that good or been that high up since 1968 (the year I was born) ;p That made laugh hysterically. :)

Do you also do yoga? I was thinking about trying it out to help with skating. I stretch out before and after skating, but was wondering if it made a difference...

  12. No yoga... can't do the doggie positions due to my surgery. I should be doing pilates however, I am too busy and can't find time to get my off ice programs going. You can email me on diane@waltzjump.com
