On The Edge... Again

The last time I skated regularly, you needed 2 pair of skates, a scribe and skated patch. Triple jumps were almost unheard of, so were Bielman spins. Twizzles were only done by ice dancers and Ronald Regan was just elected into office.

Fast Forward 32 years. Starting January 2, 2012, I am back on the ice doing something else that was unheard of .... Adult Figure Skating. We had "coffee club", which was like adult swim, but there was no opportunity for testing or competition.

It has now been 5 years since I got back on the ice. My blog is still going. My YouTube channel has over 1000 subscribers. That’s just crazy!

My Pair Skating Debut

OMG .. I have been off the ice for a week.  No excuses.. just haven't been in the mood.  I think the fear of the Axel is contributing, but that's beside the point.

Got to the rink today on a public session to get reacquainted with the ice after 7 days and I was out there getting my legs back under me.  My skating friend Hank was there.  He is also a competitive adult skater at the Silver level.

Toward the end of the session he offered to show me a few PAIRS moves.  I have never done pairs in my life.  As a child skater I always wanted to, but I was too chunky!  I still am .. but adult skaters at our age rarely do the lifts unless they have been doing them a long time.

I just wanted to know what it felt like to try and synchronize ... it was SO MUCH FUN.  I really loved it.  I wish he was available to skate pairs with .. but alas, he already has a partner.

Anyway, it was great fun!  Thanks Hank!

  1. That looks like so much fun! My bucket list includes a dance spin. I want to be held in the stag jump position while wearing a pretty dress, and be spun around! I will make it happen someday...

You have accomplished so much this year! Hope to see you at Sectionals.

  2. Thanks Melissa ... I hope to be there, but I really don't know if it will happen. I am not putting the pressure on myself. If I am ready I will go - if not I will save my money and wait until 2016.

  3. (Apologies if you receive this comment multiple times--blogger is being wonky as I type this...)

Careful Diane, you're getting dangerously close to trying ice dance next! The music for pattern dances will make your ears bleed but the dances themselves are fun.

    1. Dangerously close huh? Believe me I have considered it... especially on days like today when I fell doing a loop jump on the entry back outside edge when it slipped away from me... how I landed on my left elbow is beside me.. but it took me off the ice of the rest of the day! Truth be known.. I'll bet there are just as many falls in dance!
